The Pumpkin Patch

A few months ago I bought some pumpkin seeds that were from an eight-hundred-pound pumpkin and planted them in my backyard. My intention was to grow some giant pumpkins so that they would be fully grown by Halloween. We could then create some giant jack-o-lanterns and make lots of pumpkin pies just in time for our big annual Halloween extravaganza here at the PB Castle.

If you haven’t heard about our Halloween parties here at the PB Castle, then you should watch our Halloween 2010 video: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXiHWw8WMgE) We take parties seriously here at the castle. (Sounds funny huh? – taking partying seriously?) If Christmas is “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” then Halloween has to be “The Most Playful Time of the Year.” We adults get to be kids again for at least one day.

My staff gets excited just talking about Halloween. It takes at least six weeks just to prepare and decorate. We will typically go to lunch where we will discuss our ideas to make it even better than the year before. Everyone breaks out their notebooks as I tell them my plans. Then I get their input and we put the plan into action. First we go shopping at Party City then and all the Halloween stores. We will checkout every store in the San Diego area just to see what they have - then add more ideas. You see, the fun is not just the party itself, but preparing for the party as well.

Anyway, getting back to the pumpkin patch…about 2 weeks ago we started getting little baby pumpkins on the vines. Those little babies are growing so fast that I decided to start measuring their circumference to see just how fast. Our biggest one so far measured 12.25” around yesterday and measures 13.75” around today. Can you believe that? That’s an inch and a half growth in circumference in one day! There are MONSTERS growing in my backyard!!!

I sometimes have amazing dreams about flying over a beautiful pumpkin patch. It may seem odd but dreams about flying give you a wonderful sense of freedom and exhilaration. Having grown up on a farm in the Midwest, I have very fond memories of pumpkin patches so maybe that explains the dreams.

We decided to let our fans on our Facebook page help us in naming these baby giants by having contests. I had no idea that it would create so much excitement. And since doing so, we have attracted more than 1,000 new Facebook fans!

Thanks everyone! And this year - let’s have the best Halloween ever! K?

It's funny whenever I am beach cruising through la jolla or pacific beach checking out the different homes I always first pick the house I want by 1. how I would feel in that home on christmas morning (i love christmas) and 2. how would it look when I decorate it during halloween...boo!!!

  3. Thanx for the opportunity to win both for ma and my charity in your latest contest, but it's rather disheartening when you ask for the most likes to win yet allow cheating. I spent hours of work getting votes together (even getting support from workers at the charity and other entrants who want to see an honest win) only to have it taken by someone who has obvious false fb pages, babies and pets voting (Roger Blackwell has 2 profiles, and daisy blackwell even states in the bio on the page that she's a pug. I'm not even going to get started on Lawn Care.). I brought this up earlier in emails to your site and was told to just keep trying in this contest, but it seems there is no problem rigging these contests as nothing was done. A comment was posted that the contest would be fair (no fake fb or animals, etc.)and this would not be allowed, but that sure went far when it came down to it. Very dissapointed and really casts a tarnish on you and the site. Funny, the last time I tried entering here you were doing the pumpkin contests and offering the cruiser and I ended up getting hate comments from the peanut gallery posted on your wall! Great show and great experiences on the site, Jim!
